Rules - Four categories

The cars competing in the Le Mans 24 Hours are divided into 4 categories: LM P1 and LM P2 prototypes and LM GT1 and LM GT2 Grand Touring Cars. The first 2 categories represent the quickest cars. Those competing in the Grand Touring Categories must be approved road-going vehicles of which at least 100 have been built and commercialised (25 in the case of small manufacturers).
Air restrictors play an important role in the technical regulations. These are fitted in the inlet manifolds of all cars to balance out power, and their diameters vary according to the engine's architecture, type of fuel feed and type of fuel for the Prototypes and the weight for the Grand Touring cars.
